Protein - How Much is Enough?

Protein is a delicate subject matter in today’s nutritional community. While it has gained a solid reputation for building muscle mass and increasing recovery rates, the amount of protein needed is still completely dependent upon your activity level, age, gender, and body composition.

So the old adage “more is better” doesn’t necessarily apply. Instead protein should be utilized as part of a whole dietary approach.

Protein, as part of a complete nutrition program, can aid in muscle mass gains as well as maintaining lean body tissue. It also helps to decrease overall body fat percentage.

The recommended daily amount ranges from .8 - 2.0 grams per kg of body weight. This means a 160lb individual could need anywhere from 58 - 145g of protein daily, again, based on their activity level. This is a large range which can leave many people confused about how much they should actually take in.
