Start Simple, Start Small
Happy New Year to everyone in our Elevate circle of family and friends! For a lot of us, there's a certain level of excitement and hope attached to the start of a new year. The year lies before us like a blank canvas, and we are the artist. For some, there’s a certain amount of desperation and anguish associated with the new year...the dreaded "New Year's Resolution." I personally am not a fan of the traditional "New Year's Resolution" concept. I think they're a recipe for failure. I believe that your "New Year" doesn't have to start on January 1. Your New Year can start any day, any minute or second that you decide to make the next healthy choice. You don't have to wait until the start of a calendar New Year, or until after Xmas, or until your birthday, or after your vacation. Those are all just excuses that create pause buttons. Start your new year NOW, this very minute, by making the next healthy choice.
Typically, a "New Year's Resolution" looks something like this - "I'm going to lose 20 lbs" or "I'm going to completely cut out sugar" or "I'm going to go to the gym every day." While these are all valuable goals, they're too broad. Accomplishing them becomes about as feasible as teaching a 2 year old to read by handing them a giant novel and saying "read." A child learns to read one letter at a time. We've all heard the phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day" or "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." We accomplish large goals or resolutions the same way - brick by brick, one small step at a time.
Let's say you have a broad goal such as "I'm going to eat healthier this year." What does really mean? It means you're going to have to look at your current food and water intake, learn to navigate the grocery store and all its' choices, learn to cook using healthier recipes and ingredients, change your relationship with food, and more. Looking at that whole picture - the "resolution" - can be overwhelming, and without a small step/baby step plan, your resolution is setting you up for failure. So, don't look at the whole picture. Look at one small thing you can do right now that will get you one step closer to your "eat healthier" goal. That one small step might be as simple as "I'm going to get up from my desk and go drink a great big glass of water."
Break down your large goal into small, baby steps. Choose the smallest, easiest thing you can change right this second, and do that until it becomes second nature. Until it becomes a habit. (I'm not saying you're going to fall in love with that habit, but you're going to keep practicing it because you know it's the right healthy thing to do, and that keeps you going!) Continue to practice that habit for 2 or 3 weeks before you add another habit - the next healthy step. The approach to reaching a weight goal, a nutritional goal, a fitness goal, or any other goal is no different. Start simple. Start small.
