Fresh or Frozen?

Is fresh healthier than frozen?
Is frozen even a healthy choice?

Sometimes all this healthy vs non-healthy stuff stresses me out! I’m supposed to know this stuff, have my act together and eat healthy - I’m Zoe, the Nutrition Consultant for Elevate. But the truth is, sometimes I’m in a rush, or unprepared, or just plain lazy!! So here’s my trick...I keep frozen berries (Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc.) in my freezer for “those days!”

As far as fresh being a healthier options than frozen? That’s not always the case. Fresh produce is picked, then sits on a truck for a few days, and then sits in a warehouse for a few days, and then sits in the “fresh” produce section of your grocery store. And then maybe it sits in your refrigerator for a couple of days. During this time, your “fresh” produce is slowly losing nutrients. The longer it sits, the more nutritional value it loses. Frozen produce is flash frozen directly or within 24 hours. It doesn’t lose nutritional value once it’s been frozen, thus frozen is sometimes the healthier choice! (This applies to vegetables as well as fruits.) So don’t discount choosing frozen over “fresh.” Just read your ingredients so you’re not choosing a frozen item that also has added sugar, salt, sauces, etc.
Better, healthy steps, one choice at a time!!!!
